Discussion around dyslipidemia often focuses on one element of the disease: hyperlipidemia, characterized by elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad cholesterol”). While that condition is often effectively targeted by the statin drugs, many patients are unable to reach their LDL goal on a statin alone. There remains an opportunity for a drug that lowers LDL as a monotherapy or in combination with statins. There is an even greater need for a drug that also has a robust triglycerides-lowering effect while raising levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good cholesterol”). |
