Morris J. Birnbaum is Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania,
School of Medicine. He has published over 50 papers and is a leader in the field of glucose transport.
Dr. Birnbaum received his Ph.D. in Biology and his M.D from Brown University. He was at Harvard Medical
School from 1987 to 1994. In 1994 he moved to the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently
Professor of Medicine, Cell and Developmental Biology and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute. In 1996 he was named Director of the Cox Institute.

Dr. Olefsky was the 1998 recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s prestigious Banting Medal for scientific achievement. This award is given to one person each year in recognition of his or her significant long-term contributions to the understanding of diabetes. He has published over 350 papers and is currently on the Editorial Board of Endocrinology and Diabetes. He was at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1970 to 1978, and was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine from 1979 to 1983, where he was Head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He served as President of Metabolex, on leave from UCSD, from August 1998 to September 1999. Dr. Olefsky received his M.D. from the University of Illinois.

Kenneth Polonsky is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He won the American Diabetes Association’s Eli Lilly Award in 1994. He has published over 100 papers and is a leader in the field of insulin secretion and the genetics of type 2 diabetes. He received his M.D from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and has been on the faculty of the University of Chicago Medical School since 1980.

Dr. Shoelson has published over 130 papers, and is considered a leader in the fields of diabetes signal transduction and inflammation in insulin resistance. He won the Diabetes Care Research Award from Boehringer Mannheim and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in 1996. Dr. Shoelson received his Ph.D. in Bioorganic Chemistry and his M.D. from the University of Chicago.
