Type 2 diabetes is now global epidemic. However, drugs to treat diabetes are inadequate and generally have dose limiting side effects. We seek to address the epidemic with superior drugs based on a better understanding of the disease.

Additional Product Development Programs
We have a number of drug discovery programs focused on novel targets for metabolic diseases, primarily insulin secretion targets and insulin resistance targets. These programs evolved from extensive research we conducted related to differential gene expression in muscle and fat cells of diabetic and normal patients. This genomics effort combined our strengths in diabetes physiology, molecular genetics and cell biology with the latest advances in genomics and microarrays. We are collaborating with three large pharmaceutical companies to advance this research.
Pfizer: Metabolex and Pfizer collaborated to discover new drug treatments for type 2 diabetes that help improve the function of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Pfizer is now working to develop compounds identified under our collaboration. We receive milestone and royalties from product candidates derived from these targets.
Astellas: Metabolex and Astellas collaborated to identify novel drug screening targets using our proprietary database of human genes associated with insulin resistance and obesity. Under the collaboration, Metabolex delivered several targets that Astellas is advancing into drug discovery. We receive milestone and royalties from product candidates derived from these targets.
Johnson & Johnson: We are working closely with Johnson & Johnson to carry out high-throughput screening on select metabolic disease targets identified by Metabolex.
