Additional Product Development Programs
We have a number of drug discovery programs focused on novel targets for metabolic diseases, primarily insulin secretion targets and insulin resistance targets. These programs evolved from extensive research we conducted related to differential gene expression in muscle and fat cells of diabetic and normal patients. This genomics effort combined our strengths in diabetes physiology, molecular genetics and cell biology with the latest advances in genomics and microarrays. Our pipeline also includes several preclinical GPCR targets involved in metabolic diseases. We are collaborating with three large pharmaceutical companies to advance this research.
Johnson & Johnson: As part of a global strategic agreement with Ortho-McNeil, Inc. (a Johnson & Johnson company), Metabolex received an exclusive license to a PPAR-delta agonist program, including MBX-8025, which has completed a Phase 2 proof-of-concept study. We also have a target collaboration to screen metabolic disease targets identified by Metabolex.
Pfizer: Using data from our genomics program, we identified a series of drug development targets. Pfizer is now in the process of screening a number of those targets and developing product candidates optimized from such screens. We are entitled to downstream revenue, including royalties, from such programs without any further financial commitment.
Takeda: Metabolex has identified protein targets that may lead to biologic products. These targets were identified through our metabolic disease genomics program. Metabolex is collaborating with Takeda on the evaluation and validation of these targets.
