METABOLEX APPOINTS PATRICK J. DOYLE, Ph.D. AS CHIEF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Hayward, Calif., (May 31, 2005): Metabolex, Inc. today announced the appointment of Patrick James Doyle, Ph.D. as Chief Corporate Development Officer. Doyle joins Metabolex from Roche in Basel, Switzerland, where he most recently served as Vice President, Global Head of Pre-Clinical Partnering and as a member of Roche’s Research and Development Committee.
At Metabolex, Doyle will lead corporate development activities including licensing and strategic partnerships to enable the Company’s vision of bringing new therapies to patients that will transform the treatment of diabetes and metabolic diseases.
“Patrick brings 15 years of broad pharmaceutical experience to Metabolex, ranging from research and development to business development, licensing and alliance management,” said Harold Van Wart, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Metabolex. “His expertise in identifying partners, managing these relationships and finding in-licensing opportunities for pipeline expansion will be invaluable to Metabolex as we advance our lead candidate, metaglidasen, and become a late-stage development company with multiple product candidates for the treatment of diabetes.”
While at Roche, Doyle established and implemented the company’s global external preclinical, research and technology strategy and led a team of executives to identify, execute and manage diverse preclinical deals. Most recently as Global Head of Pre-Clinical Partnering, he was responsible for evaluating and signing collaborative partners among Fortune 500, mid-sized pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms for research, preclinical and product opportunities, as well as managing partner relationships. As Global Alliance Director, he was responsible for several late-stage deals aimed at replenishing the pipeline, including the integration of Chugai’s late-stage portfolio into the global Roche Group.
“I’m very excited to join Metabolex and look forward to helping the Company establish important collaborations to advance and accelerate the commercialization of first-in-class, breakthrough therapeutics to treat type 2 diabetes,” said Doyle.
From 1995 to 2000, Doyle worked at Novo Nordisk in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a scientific coordinator and from 1990 to 1995 as an investigator at the Laboratory of Metabolic Research in Geneva, Switzerland, in the area of metabolic diseases and brain function. He received his B.Sc. (Hons) degree in pharmacology from the University of Sunderland in England and studied at the University of Geneva, where he specialized in CNS function.
